Moving checklist: before your move
- Set moving date: Choose a date you want to move and make sure it fits your schedule and availability.
- Moving company vs. moving yourself: Decide whether to hire a moving company or handle the move yourself. If necessary, get quotes and book the moving company.
- Communicate change of address: Submit your change of address to the municipality, post office, employer, bank, insurance companies and other relevant agencies.
- Prepare new home: Make sure your new home is ready to move into, including cleaning rooms, checking utilities and arranging any needed repairs.
- Insurance: Check that your current insurance policies are also valid for your new home. If necessary, adjust them or purchase new insurance.
- Moving boxes and packing materials: Gather enough moving boxes, packing materials, labels and tape to pack your belongings.
- Clearing and sorting: Go through your possessions and decide what you want to take with you to your new home. Donate, sell or discard unwanted items.
Moving checklist: during your move
- Packing: Start packing your belongings, starting with the items you need the least. Clearly label the boxes with the contents and the room they are to go to. Be careful with fragile items! For example, transport these in a separate cart so you can be sure they arrive in one piece.
- Utilities: Arrange the disconnection of utilities (gas, water, electricity) at your old address and make sure the connection is arranged at your new address.
- Moving Day Essentials: Gather essential items such as keys, important documents, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, snacks and water for moving day.
- Check the home: Walk through the old home before you leave to make sure you haven’t left anything behind and everything is in good condition.
