Pantone, the company that publishes color codes, calls out the “color of the year” every year. This year, they even chose two: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow are officially the colors for 2021. At first glance, two extremes, but Pantone has a good reason for that.

It is not the first year Pantone chose a duo – that honor goes to 2016 with the colors soft blue (“Serenity”) combined with baby pink (“Rose Quartz”). That was in celebration of gender equality. They describe the color combination as “practical and rock solid, but at the same time warming and optimistic (…) a color combination that gives us resilience and hope.”. Pantone chose Ultimate Gray for its ability to express a sense of stability and determination, especially in times of uncertainty and change. The pantone color of 2021 “Illuminating Yellow” represents joy, positivity and optimism. It is a vibrant and energetic color reminiscent of the warmth of the sun’s rays. Pantone chose Illuminating Yellow for its ability to exude a sense of hope, vitality and optimism, which was so important during a period of global challenges. Together, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow symbolize the idea of powerful resilience and hopeful optimism. The combination of these two colors encourages resilience, optimism and finding creative solutions in the midst of difficult circumstances. It serves as a reminder of the strength that comes from bringing opposites together and finding balance.
