Banner Appartement - How to create a fall aesthetic in your apartment

The streets are turning yellow and orange and at night you are reaching for your warm blanket earlier and earlier. That means autumn is here! Make your apartment fall-proof thanks to these tips .

1. Make your apartment warmer and cozier

  • Lay down a thick carpet or rug to insulate cold floors and keep your feet warm. This will make your apartment extra cozy.
  • Use warm plaids, blankets and pillows in fall colors such as red, orange, brown and yellow. Place them over your sofa and bed for extra comfort.
  • Put on a background music or use an app with sounds of rain, wind or crackling fireplace to complete the atmosphere.
  • If you have a smart thermostat, set it to heat your apartment just before you get home and lower it when you’re gone.
  • Hang heavy curtains. These help keep heat in and cold out. Choose thick fabric or thermal curtains to keep your apartment better insulated.

2. Bring nature inside

  • Use accessories in autumn colors such as orange, red, burgundy and brown to bring the autumn atmosphere indoors.
  • Go for a walk in the woods and collect chestnuts, pine cones, leaves or some pretty branches and display them in a pretty vase.
  • Place real fall plants such as chrysanthemum, hebe or pearl berry bring the appropriate atmosphere into your home. Consider potted plants or dried flowers.

3. Prepare for fall weather

  • Inspect your apartment for drafts. If necessary, hang draft strips to stop it.
  • Maintain your windows and doors. Check them for cracks and damage to block drafts.
  • Switch to heavier bedding, such as flannel or wool, to keep you warm during cold nights.
  • Check that your heating system is still working properly. Avoid sitting out in the cold with a broken heating system.
  • Check that your ventilation system is still working properly. This will prevent mold during the more humid periods starting in the fall.
  • Use warmer fabrics in the bathroom such as thicker towels and bath mats for extra comfort after a hot shower.
  • Prevent drafts by sealing gaps at doors and windows. Use draft strips or draft rollers to keep heat in.
  • Prepare for stormy weather. Attach everything securely to your balcony so nothing will fly in strong winds or float in heavy rain.

  • The smell of a fresh pot of pumpkin soup or a freshly baked carrot cake immediately puts you in a cozy autumn mood.
  • Open a window every morning to refresh the air in your apartment. This prevents mold and brings a springtime smell into your home.
  • Use scented candles, wax melts or fragrance diffusers with scents such as cinnamon, vanilla, pumpkin, or apple. These scents will give your home a warm, autumnal atmosphere.

5. Do a fall cleaning (if necessary).

  • Thoroughly clean your carpets and curtains.
  • Dust hard-to-reach areas. E.g. ceiling corners and air vents.
  • Clean your windows to let in as much light as possible during the shorter days.
  • Place sturdy, absorbent doormats at the entrance to your apartment. This will help keep mud, rainwater and leaves out during the fall. This will keep your apartment clean longer.

6. Customize your decoration

  • Decorate your home in a spooky theme for Halloween (Oct. 31). Use pumpkins to decorate your apartment. Want to do something in your spare time? Then engage in pumpkin carving!
  • Use table lamps and floor lamps instead of bright ceiling lights. This will make your spaces more inviting.
  • With the shorter days, it is helpful to check that you have energy-efficient bulbs everywhere. Replace them if necessary.
  • Consider painting your walls a warm autumn hue such as deep orange, burgundy or earth tones. This will instantly make your interior more cozy.
  • Choose warm, soft lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Candles and LED bulbs with warm light are ideal for making dark fall evenings more cozy.
