DIY Christmas tree: alternatives to a real Christmas tree

For those who live in an apartment, a Christmas tree with all the trimmings is not an obvious choice. After all, how do you get such a tree up the stairs? And where do you place your Christmas tree if you have limited space? No reason to panic! There are plenty of options to bring the Christmas spirit into your cozy apartment without bringing a real tree inside. Behold: the DIY Christmas tree!

DIY Christmas tree: The book tree

For this DIY tree, you don’t even have to leave your house. All you need is a stack of books and Christmas lights. Start with a large circle of thicker books for a solid foundation. Stack smaller and smaller circles of books Lego-style until you get the desired height and shape. Drape a string of Christmas lights casually over the pile of books and you’re done! Add a poinsettia at the top to complete your tree. Beware: incorporating your book of Christmas recipes into the pile is never a good idea.

DIY Christmas tree: The minimalist

You can easily pair this DIY idea with a nice winter walk in the woods. While there, pick out some nice branches that match nicely with each other. Using sturdy cutters, cut the twigs to the desired length and attach them to the wall with thumb tacks. You can also tie the twigs together with a clear wire, so all you have to do is pin the wire to the wall. Is this style a little too minimal for you? You instantly liven things up by hanging small Christmas lights between them.

DIY Christmas tree: The washi tree

Perhaps more fun than decorating a real Christmas tree: create your own fir tree with washi tape! Big advantage: you decide all the colors of your Christmas tree. Washi tape comes in all colors, patterns and sizes, so you can be at your most creative with it. A pink Christmas tree with white balls? You can! A yellow Christmas tree with brightly colored flower pot? Top idea! Spice up your washi tree by zigzagging a garland of lights between them. You can even attach your Christmas cards or fun photos to those lights. Plenty of options!
