5 Simple DIY chores for beautiful results

Renovating doesn’t have to be complicated, grand or expensive. A simple DIY job can completely transform your home. These 5 jobs will get you a beautiful result.

Job 1: Give your home a fresh coat of paint

Refresh your interior with a new lick of paint on the wall, ceiling and/or interior doors. Tackle all the rooms in one weekend or spread the paint job over several days off. This job is affordable and quick, but has a huge impact on the mood of the room. Play with color and completely transform the mood. Or repaint your space in the same color. Work away paint chips and dirty stains. This will make your room feel fresh again. Tip: Less free time? Give a piece of furniture (such as a cabinet or table) a coat of paint to make it fit in better with your decor.

Job 2: Upgrade your lighting

Replace your old bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs

LED lighting is more energy efficient unlike halogen and incandescent bulbs. In addition, LED lighting is more suitable for intensive daily use. Outdated incandescent or energy-saving bulbs need time to emit light at full power. LED lighting requires no warm-up time.

Choose the right color temperature

Warm white has an orange-yellow hue and gives your space a cozy feel. Cold white has a blue tint. This gives your room a chilly feel. Cold white is preferred in rooms where brightness is important, such as showrooms, dental offices and laboratories.

Invest in smart LED lighting

Do you have a flexible renovation budget? Then install smart LED lighting. That way you control your lights with your smartphone, tablet, computer or even voice. Some premium brands have a free app where you program your routine and movement through your home. Thanks to that automation, you’ll always have light where and when you need it. Still on a more limited budget? Start with a small number of smart bulbs. If you like it, add more and more lights to the smart network. Read more about smart options in our home automation blog.

Job 3: Replace your window coverings

Every home has window coverings. Whether they are blinds or (roller) curtains. They provide you with extra privacy and regulate the light in your rooms. A change of window coverings can drastically change the mood of your space. And replacing window coverings is an easier job than you think. These days, black, wood blinds are a popular, modern choice. The black color darkens well. Plus, they have a sleek look and contrast nicely with busy interiors. Another popular choice are curtains. These give your space a classic and organic feel. Choose long curtains, almost from the ceiling to the floor, for an extra luxurious look.

Job 4: Freshen up your electrical outlets and light switches

Caution: With electricity, always be careful. Always turn off the fuse. Most outlets and switches are treated with a flame retardant, which turns yellow after prolonged UV exposure. Clean them gently with a damp baby wipe. This can work wonders. Still more stubborn dirt? Then turn off the fuse on the outlet or switch. Wait long enough until there is no more power on it. Then unscrew the cover. Soak the cover in soapy water. Dry the cover well after soaking. And screw the cover back on. Did cleaning have no effect? Then replace the covers yourself or go for safe and hire an electrician to come and do it.

Task 5: Cleaning up and reorganizing.

A chore that doesn’t require you to bring anything new into your home. Set aside a weekend to clean out your entire house. Donate unnecessary items you no longer need. Give them to friends or charity. Or sell them through a second-hand website. Ideal for rearranging your space afterwards. That one sitting area that has been in the same spot for years might look more functional in another place after all. Try to make the best use of your room space, keeping the functionality of each piece of furniture in mind.
